It’s no secret that a low carb diet can help manage type-2 diabetes, but making this lasting lifestyle change can seem like a daunting challenge at times, without the proper level of support and guidance.

But there is a promising solution. Three of our Atkins Scientific Advisory Board members just completed and published the results of a yearlong study in Diabetes Therapy, which demonstrates that remote patient monitoring combined with a low carb diet can help adults manage their type-2 diabetes while reducing their use of diabetes medications. At the end of the study, 94% of the patients enrolled who were prescribed insulin reduced or stopped using insulin while improving their HbA1c—which is also known as glycated hemoglobin, and is an indicator of blood sugar levels—and they also lost weight. The patients who chose to stick with a traditional program with less support had no changes to their HbA1c or diabetes medication usage.

A major reason this study was so successful—and what set it apart from other studies—is the remote patient monitoring, which featured an app that included access to a health coach, a physician to help manage their medications, biomarker feedback, nutritional and lifestyle change education and an online community.

The result? You can effectively manage (or even eliminate) type-2 diabetes with a low carb diet and this new remote care model. Stay tuned for more developments in this area. And, if you’re ready to start a low carb diet or need more support on your low carb journey, Atkins also offers some great free tools, including our Atkins mobile app, carb counter, meal plans and shopping lists and a supportive online community. Our low carb recipes and products also make living a low carb lifestyle even more convenient… and delicious!
