Rob Lowe has been living a low carb lifestyle since his late 30s, which is why it made perfect sense for him to become Atkins’ newest brand spokesperson. Sharing his passion for living a low carb lifestyle plus his favorite low carb meals and snacks just comes naturally, and I recently had the chance to talk to Rob and learn how eating low carb is one of his secrets to his good health and unlimited energy to devote to his career and family.

Q. When did you start really thinking about how you were eating and the impact it has on your body?

It was in my late 30s. I realized I couldn’t eat like a teenager any more. I’ve been practicing an Atkins low carb lifestyle since then – I enjoy lots of great food and it’s how I feel and look my best. Today’s Atkins focuses on foods that are rich in healthy protein and low in carbs and sugar. It’s a simple approach that tastes delicious and is a real way to live.

Q. What made you think low carb was the right way to go?

I could eat great food and feel good. I don’t ever feel deprived, or like I’m missing out. I can have my In-N-Out Burger – I just get it protein style without the bun. Too many carbs and sugar make you sluggish – and I need a lot of energy for my life, and to stay in great shape.

 Q. What was the one thing that Atkins was doing that surprised you?

I was surprised to see how mission-driven Atkins is. They want to make the world a healthier place by giving people tools and education to make better choices. The Hidden Sugar campaign is a great way to teach people how the carbs they are eating turn into sugar and they don’t realize it.

 Q. What do you eat in a typical day?

I always start the day with protein – typically eggs or Greek yogurt with low carb granola. I also love my green juice packed with lots of vegetables. Lunch is typically a chicken Caesar salad and an Atkins bar or shake for a mid-afternoon snack. For dinner, I eat either fish or steak with a chopped salad.

 Q. What benefits have you seen from living a low carb lifestyle?

It all starts with how you feel on the inside, and when you feel good, you look good. I enjoy eating well because it gives me more energy. It’s the single biggest component that I’ve found in a healthy lifestyle, even more so than working out.

 Q. You have talked before about your favorite cheat meals. Tell us a little bit more of why this matters to you.

Every once in a while, I’ll treat myself to pizza or a chocolate milkshake. I wouldn’t call them cheat meals though. I just make healthy choices most of the time. I never diet.

 Q. What are your favorite Atkins products?

I have a sweet tooth and don’t have to sacrifice sweets on Atkins – I love their bars and shakes; my favorite is the Harvest Trail Dark Chocolate Sea Salt Caramel bar and chocolate shakes. I have them with me on set for snacks, or after dinner for a treat and they keep me fueled and satisfied.
